I love new mommies! They are just the best people on Earth. The poor girls are going through a million changes, so many of them overwhelming, and yet they hold it all together for their new little ones.
I had the blessing of photographing this couple’s wedding and they are returning soon after… (within a year!)… to have me photograph the arrival of their first baby!
Adding another dimension of cuteness to the whole story, is the fact that their due date was their first anniversary! Did I hear you go, “Awwwww!”? … if not, you should have! 😉
This sweet new mommy had total faith in me, after being thrilled with their engagement and wedding portraits she knew I wasn’t about to disappoint her.
I have taken enough maternity portraits now to know the most popular images are a few of the expecting mom and dad together, and the interesting “belly shots”. And don’t worry ladies… stretch marks are all taken care of, unless of course you like that kind of thing.
It wasn’t long after the maternity session I was blessed once again with the news that their son, Gabriel had arrived. Healthy at 10+ lbs!
We were in the studio with him before he was even two weeks old. Which is the best time frame to be in by, so you can get them to curl up all cute and sleepy.
Isn’t he just precious! A little chunka-love!
P.S. I want to mention Ryan is an insurance agent for Farm Bureau in Northwood, IA and has always taken excellent care of us as customers. Look him up if you are in need of insurance! 🙂

It seems like everywhere I go lately, I see someone who is either pregnant, just had a baby, or is announcing they are expecting! Seriously!
Let’s just hope my business can land some new and return customers with all this baby magic! *wink*
I’ve gotta say, I do love photographing newborns and expectant mothers. The whole process is such a miracle and I enjoy being there for the journey with them and maintaining that relationship through the baby’s first year in professional portraits.
This blog post is featuring a maternity session I just photographed last weekend. I like to call these “Belly Love Sessions”… it’s just my little spin on it.
I loved pregnancy. I had a great experience being pregnant with Collin so it makes me happy to just being around women who are in the later stages of their pregnancy. They are usually very calm and yet full of anticipation and excitement to finally meet their little one.
Michelle and Dan are no exception. They are just the sweetest couple and will make fantastic parents. I captured their engagement portraits for them back in 2007 and they were just so cute back then!
Michelle has been a huge fan of my work and I’m pretty sure she would have had me photograph her wedding, but they decided to be married in Jamaica where they booked an all-inclusive package for their wedding. (Bummer for me! As I love to travel!) 😉
Luckily, even though Michelle and Dan moved further away from my studio (to Nebraska) they have still stayed in touch through facebook and continue to tell me they love me and my work the best! (Awwwww! I’m blushing!) So we scheduled this maternity session for the same weekend they would already be traveling back to Mason City for a baby shower with Michelle’s family.
Michelle and Dan have decided to wait to find out the gender of their baby and I am thrilled for them because my husband convinced me to wait and I was sure glad we did. In the end it was so exciting!
I hope they love these portraits. We did some classic images and a few more modern, fun shots as well.
This family has been on my blog a few times before. I had the pleasure of photographing Brett and Karie’s engagement, but I was out of luck on their wedding, as I was already booked that weekend. And then I had the honor of taking little Gracie’s newborn portraits almost two years ago now. So I was very happy to get the phone call from the radiantly expecting, Karie.
I just love this girl! She’s an art teacher and has such a beautiful free spirit about her that is hard to put into words. I just think she seems so peaceful and happy all the time.
Little Gracie is growing up so fast, and she’s just a little fireball! 🙂 Maybe she gets that from her daddy! (Right, Karie?)
I love kids this age as they are so expressive of their emotions and it all shows on their faces.
We had our work cut out for us on that hot, hot day… trying to take maternity portraits of Karie, 2 year old portraits of Gracie, and then family portraits as well. Whew! But it was nice and cool in the shade at Myre-Big Island State Park in Albert Lea, MN. It’s a good thing we scheduled the appointment for when we did because it was that day at 4 pm that all the Minnesota Parks were shut down due to the congressmen not being able to settle on a budget. (Just another reason I’m proud to live in Iowa now!) Hahaha!
